The Tidal Granary sits on the quay at Saltern Quay. The tide comes to within thirty feet of the door twice a day.

Fen Bar. Opens an hour before dinner service and takes walk-ins at the counter until last orders.

Winter break. Closed 1–16 January while the kitchen garden is cut back.

Summer break. Closed the first two weeks of August.

Getting here

Four ways in

By car
Fourteen free spaces on the quay, first come. On a high spring tide the far end floods — we will warn you if your date is one of those.
By train
Twenty-two minutes by taxi from the nearest station. We will book one back for you; ask at the end of dinner.
On foot
The channel path runs from the town in eighteen minutes. It is unlit, so bring a torch after dark.
By boat
Two visitor moorings on the quay, two hours either side of high water. Tell us and we will keep an eye out.
Access

What is step-free and what is not

It is an 1841 grain store, so we would rather tell you exactly what the building does than claim it is fully accessible. Tell us what you need when you book and we will put you in the right room.

Step-free
The main room, the bar, the snug and the accessible WC, all directly from the quay.
Lift
To the first floor and the Loading Floor, 1100mm × 1400mm car.
Two steps
The Kiln Room. A portable ramp is kept behind the bar; ask and it takes a minute.
Not step-free
The fire counter, reached by a staircase with a handrail on one side. We are sorry; the mezzanine cannot take a lift.
Hearing
The main room is brick and oak and can be loud on a Saturday. Ask for a table at the garden end.
Menus
Large-print menus at every service; tick the box when you book and one will be on your table.
The building

1841

Grain came up the channel by barge, was hoisted through the loading door on the east wall and dried in the kiln at the back. The channel silted, the barges stopped, and the building spent twenty years empty with the tide still coming to within thirty feet of the door twice a day. The brick, the oak trusses and the cast-iron hoist are all original. The floor, the roof and the plumbing are emphatically not.

Look around the rooms

Bring a coat in February.

It is a converted granary by a tidal channel and it is draughty by the door. The fire more than makes up for it.
